Customized diagnostics and treatments

Accurate and comprehensive diagnostic exams and screenings: We utilize advanced imaging, 3D scans, and multiple functional assessments to gain a detailed understanding of the patient's orofacial structure and function.

Periodontics: Dr. Amin has completed a three-year residency in periodontics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. However, she does not limit her practice to periodontics because she believes in a comprehensive approach and wanted to gain advanced training in other aspects of dentistry as well. Her periodontal training highly qualifies her to perform surgical interventions that may be needed as part of a customized comprehensive treatment plan.

Orthodontics and TMJ: After completing her periodontal training, Dr. Amin trained with Professor Sato in craniomandibular orthodontics using the MEAW technique. She has further studied under Dr. Roberto Velasquez to employ the GEAW technique as well. This treatment approach is different from traditional orthodontics in that it requires joint assessments and advanced imaging and analyses. As the function of the entire system is taken into consideration, the result is not only esthetic, but also highly functional and preventative of TMJ and airway disorders.

Biomimetic dentistry: Dr. Amin uses biomimetic dentistry protocols for all restorative work that is needed. Biomimetic dentistry focuses on mimicking nature. The goal is to preserve as much of the natural tooth structure as possible.

In traditional dentistry, we are taught to remove a minimum amount of tooth structure for dental restorations, whether that tooth structure is healthy or not.

In biomimetic dentistry, we rely on superior materials for restorations, which allows us to remove as little tooth structure as needed to restore the tooth. The resulting restorations are not only strong and long-lasting, but they have built-in fail-safes to prevent further damage to the tooth. This means reduced need for more invasive procedures like root canals or extractions. In the case that a root canal is necessary, we have the appropriate protocols and materials in place to prevent further deterioration of the tooth, excellent support of the tooth, and superior sealing and restoration of the tooth after the root canal is completed. Overall, biomimetic dentists take ample time and effort to appropriately diagnose the tooth, use the best high quality materials that mimic the properties of a natural tooth, and restore the tooth in a way that aims to prevent further breakdown. All while retaining your own tooth structure - as much of it and as long as possible.

A little history

The principles of biomimetic dentistry were developed by researchers at prestigious universities in Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Italy, Turkey, The United States, and many other countries. In the mid-late 1990's, Dr. Pascal Magne was officially the first dentist to mention these protocols as biomimetic dentistry and has recently authored the first textbook explaining the concepts. In the mid-1990's, Dr. David Alleman began reviewing and organizing the literature and research in biomimetic dentistry and created a protocol that could be implemented clinically. He currently teaches this protocol to dentists all around the world and is working hard to encourage dental schools to update their outdated teachings and to implement these protocols.

Dr. Amin is one of only a handful of periodontists in the U.S. that has trained in biomimetic dentistry under Dr. David Alleman. She has completed a year-long mastership at the Alleman Center and continues to stay updated with biomimetic literature by consulting with her mentors about new materials and technology and how it can be implemented within the biomimetic protocols.
